Francis Holland School UK - October 2010

Francis Holland School has just returned from a fantastic sports tour to South Africa. There were many wonderful sights and delights, but none more special than our trip to the Fisantekraal township. In the lead up to the tour, Francis Holland organised seven different fund raising events in order to raise money for the township. Of the 38 girls involved in the tour, many of the girls did not realise how different life was in a township and how little the people had in terms of real possessions. The walking tour of the township gave our girls an exceptional insight into the daily runnings of Fisantekraal and hands on experience when caring for some of the younger inhabitants via the many creches and day care centres. The girls also went on a tour of one of the local educational facilities - Trevor Manuel Primary School. It was truly facinating to invisage life in a township, including going to school there. The day ended perfectly with a netball fixture against the school children, which was a hard fought battle against a mixed ability team. The Trevor Manuel students were certainly proud of their school and both played and supported their teams with great fervour! The experience was spellbinding and has certainly opened the minds of the Francis Holland girls. I would thoroughly recommend a township tour to any trip going to South Africa.
